Laurie Cook, D.V.M.

Lead Veterinarian

Biography

I am a 1984 graduate of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and have been working at GFAH since 1986. I grew up in Potomac, Maryland, and did undergraduate work at the University of Maryland and the University of Massachusetts.

I decided to be a veterinarian when I was in high school, and I believe I have the best occupation ever.  I love talking with people about their pets and helping them choose the best veterinary care for their unique family member.  I also have a passion for surgery.  It is so rewarding to make a sick or injured animal feel better.

I have previously owned a Basset Hound, English Springer Spaniels, and rescue Boxers.  After discovering Whirehaired Pointing Griffons, however, I am now hooked on these muppet-like dogs, and it is unlikely I will ever have any other breed.

My household includes my husband, Randy, My son Tyler, and three Wirehaired Pointing Griffons, Gator, Tessie and Crash.  While I am temporarily catless for the first time since 1983, I have loved and lived with as many as five cats at one time.

My husband and I spend a great deal of time enjoying our dogs.  Every weekend we can be found either training or competing, both locally and nationally, in agility, hunt tests, obedience and rally.  I love to talk to people about dog training, for basic obedience, problem-solving or teaching your dog to get ready to enter competition events.

I am an avid Red Sox fan, having married into the “faith” in 1982. To quote Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) from the movie Bull Durham, “I believe in the church of baseball.” I watch just about every game and read about the state of the nation daily. My husband and I have also followed our boys around the country, and we hope to eventually visit every major league ballpark. Our first Springer was named Fenway.

The rest of my free time involves reading sci-fi, doing crosswords or logic puzzles, watching the Capitals, the Washington Football Team and Patriots, and enjoying our area’s many fine restaurants.
